Laura Chappell Webinars on Wireshark Certification

If you haven’t heard, there is now a Wireshark certification.  From the Wireshark University website:

The Wireshark Certification Program strives to test a candidate’s knowledge and ability to troubleshoot, optimize and secure a network based on evidence found by analyzing traffic captured with the world’s most popular and widely-deployed analyzer, Wireshark.

To that end, Laura Chappell is hosting a series of FREE Webinars over the next 3 days to discuss the exam.  Again, taken from the Wireshark University website:

These free events cover the process of preparing and registering for the Wireshark Certified Network Analyst Exam. What should you study? How should you study? What are the hot areas on the Exam? What are the Exam question formats? What should you watch for? What if you need to reschedule the Exam? What can you bring with you?

Live question and answer will follow a 20-minute presentation hosted by Laura Chappell.

All the information you need should be available on the following website:

I know that everyone is awaiting the results of my latest contest, where I am giving away a FREE Copy of the Certified Wireless Technology Specialist (CWTS) Study Guide.  I promise that I will comb through the entries in the next couple of days and post the results.

In the meantime, I did want to publish some time sensitive material.  I will be speaking this Wednesday (#WirelessWednesday) at the Sonoran Desert Security Users Group meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.  I will be presenting on “High Density Wi-Fi – Lessons Learned From Apple’s iPhone Demo”.

The meeting details are below (my presentation is from approximately(9:15 – 10:30 AM).  Feel free to reach out directly if you need additional information.  If you are in the Phoenix area, I hope to see you on Wednesday!

I’m Giving Away a FREE Copy of the CWTS Study Guide!

Perhaps you want to gain an entry level certification in wireless networking & security?  Maybe you want a better understanding of the “bits and bytes” of wireless. Or maybe you’d like to read case studies of wireless site surveys, installations, and troubleshooting in different industries.

All of that information (and more) is contained in the CWTS (Certified Wireless Technology Specialist) Official Study Guide by Robert Bartz and published by Sybex.

Here’s the best part — I am giving away a copy for FREE. Shipped right to your door if you are anywhere in the US.

Last week I announced a contest to win this book by submitting the most insightful/valuable wireless blog (or news source).  So far, there have been *no* entries, so at this point, I’d say you have a pretty good chance of winning…

However, the contest closes tomorrow, Wednesday, August 11th. Submit your entry by leaving a comment on this blog post (there is a link at the top of the post near the category information and tags).  Alternatively, you can leave a comment on the original post, “What’s Your Favorite Wireless Blog or News Source”.

Gestalt IT Tech Field Day

In my last post, I highlighted one of my favorite industry events, Shmoocon.  This led to me to start thinking about and researching other events, trade shows, and the like.

One interesting website that I have been researching is Gestalt IT.   It appears that they have held several events in the last year connecting IT vendors w/ bloggers & other influencers.   It looks like their Flagship event is called the “Tech Field Day“.

I would like to know if any of my readers have participated in one of these events as either a vendor or a delegate.  What did you think — good, bad, or indifferent?!? Besides the delegates, are their other attendees?  Feel free to leave a comment or email me directly at douglas <dot> haider <at> xirrus <dot> com.

Shmoocon 2011 Announced

The dates for Shmoocon 2011 were recently announced.  The annual East-coast hackers convention will be held January 28th – 30th (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)  2011.

It appears that the convention will take place at a different venue this year, the Washington Hilton Hotel.  As a Platinum Marriott member, I am a little disappointed that it won’t take place at the Wardman Park Marriott as it had in years past.

If I could tell you one thing, it’s that attendance to this event sells out FAST (literally, within minutes), so keep watching the Shmoocon website on dates and times to get your tickets.  You will have to jump on them immediately.  That being said, the majority of the weekend passes are usually available for around $75, so it’s not hard to see why they sell out so fast.

One of the best things about Shmoocon is the high quality speakers they bring in each year.  Speakers that have stuck out to me in the past include Joshua Wright and Simple Nomad.

Besides the quality content, another great reason to attend is that it is FUN.  They have lots of ancillary activities to include a “Hack or Halo” contest (hackers compete in a capture the flag contest and gamers participate in a Halo contest on the XBox 360), as well as an off-site party.

Bottom line, Shmoocon is definitely worth both your time and your money.

What’s Your Favoirte Wireless Blog or News Source?

I recently read an article entitled “Why employees don’t want to blog“.  The article stated that less than 1% of Internet users have an active blog.

Personally, I have a rather hard time finding blogs about Enterprise Wi-Fi networking & security. That being said, there’s a real need for this type of information.

As Nigel Fenwick points out in the video interview below, there is a much bigger value to this online content than one might think due to the high number of people that are engaged as critics, conversationalists, or spectators.

One such person is Andrew VonNagy, who participated in one of my contests offering a “Free Copy of Wireless Hacking Exposed” in exchange for the best wireless pen testing tip.

The funny thing is, by entering the contest, I stumbled onto Andrew’s blog — Revolution Wi-Fi — and realized that Andrew is a wonderful content creator.   For example, over the last several days, Andrew published a great series of posts about Wireless Quality of Service.

This “discovery” motivated me to start another contest. Tell me about a new wireless blog (or news source).  Some of my favorites are already listed along the bottom, left-hand side of WiFiJedi.com Whoever submits the most compelling content will win a free copy of the Certified Wireless Technology Specialist Official Study Guide.

I’ll choose the winner on the next #WirelessWednesday (Aug. 11th)
